Magnetic Cylinder Cover: Anti-Burglary Protection
A magnetic cylinder cover protects your lock against drilling and snapping. Role, benefits and fitting in Paris by a locksmith craftsman.
The cylinder is one of burglars’ favourite targets: drilling, snapping, picking. The magnetic cylinder cover (sometimes called a shield or cylinder protector) adds a physical layer that makes these techniques much harder. Here is why it is increasingly popular in Paris.
What is a magnetic cylinder cover?
It is a metal reinforcement fixed around the cylinder on the outside, typically made of:
- ✓A shield (plate/reinforcement) screwed firmly in place
- ✓A cover or flap that hides the keyway
- ✓A magnetic system: a magnetised key or dedicated magnet opens the cover to access the cylinder
As long as the cover is closed, the cylinder is not directly accessible to break-in tools.
Which attacks does it protect against?
- ✓Drilling the cylinder
- ✓Snapping / extraction
- ✓Fast access for picking or bumping
- ✓“Opportunistic” attacks on cylinders that stick out too far
It does not replace a good multipoint lock or door armouring, but it specifically addresses the cylinder vulnerability — very common on Paris flat doors. On doors where the cylinder clearly protrudes from the rose, the cover becomes almost essential: that protrusion is exactly what gives tools a grip for snapping. In co-ownership, choose a discreet finish (stainless steel or black) to stay aligned with the landing aesthetic.
Magnetic cover vs fixed cover
Type
| Advantage | Limit |
|---|---|
| Magnetic | Controlled access, neat look |
| Magnetised key to manage | Fixed / rotating |
| Robustness, associated A2P models | Less “discreet” depending on design |
The choice depends on the door, handle and protection level sought. Our magnetic lock cover page details the options.
Pair it properly with a high-security cylinder
The winning duo:
- High-security cylinder (anti-drill, ownership card) — from ~€220 incl. VAT
- A suitable cylinder cover
- Optional: anti-pry strip from €360 incl. VAT
Without a quality cylinder, the cover remains useful but incomplete. See high-security cylinder.
Fitting in Paris: points to watch
- ✓Compatibility with the existing handle and plate
- ✓Cylinder too long / too short (length adjustment)
- ✓Already armoured doors: sometimes a specific model
- ✓Aesthetics in co-ownership (nickel, black, brass finishes)
Installation is quick for a professional, but poor drilling or poor tightening can weaken the door: entrust fitting to a craftsman.
Who is it particularly useful for?
- ✓Flats with a protruding cylinder
- ✓Homes already victim of an attempt targeting the cylinder
- ✓Tenants / owners who want reinforcement without major works
- ✓As a complement after a cylinder change
Installation: typical sequence
- Check cylinder length and protrusion
- Choose the model (magnetic / fixed, finish)
- Drill and fix the shield with high-resistance screws
- Adjust the cover and test the magnetised key
- Check that the handle and bolt work without rubbing
Usual duration: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. If the cylinder is too long or too short, we replace it in the same visit to avoid a “false” security gain.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ✓Fitting a cover on a low-end cylinder without replacing it
- ✓Choosing a model incompatible with an existing handle (centres)
- ✓Neglecting the new cylinder’s ownership card (uncontrolled duplicates)
- ✓Believing the cover replaces a multipoint lock or anti-pry strip
Paris door security is built in coherent layers, not with a single accessory.
