Lost Keys in Paris: Recut Keys or Replace the Lock?

Losing your keys is common in Paris: metro, café, park, stolen bag… The question comes up immediately: have a duplicate cut or change the lock (the cylinder)? The right answer depends on the risk that someone can find your address and enter your home.

Recutting keys: when is it enough?

Having keys reproduced can be enough if:

• ✓You lost the keys in a private place (at a relative’s, at the office) and you have recovered them or are certain they are unusable
• ✓Nothing allows someone to identify your address (no label, no building badge, no mail in the bag)
• ✓You still have an original copy for reproduction
• ✓Your cylinder is not at the end of its life

Changing the cylinder: when it is essential

Change the cylinder (or the full lock) if:

1. The keys were stolen with a wallet, phone or papers
2. A keyring shows your address, door code or building name
3. You have just moved in and do not know how many duplicates are in circulation
4. You are separating or leaving a flatmate / ex-partner
5. After a break-in attempt or burglary
6. Your cylinder is old, easy to pick or non-standard

In these situations, only recutting keys does not remove access from whoever still holds the lost original.

Standard cylinder vs high-security cylinder

In Paris, the most common replacement is a cylinder change without replacing the whole lock:

Tenant or owner: who decides?

• ✓Tenant: in case of loss, you can generally change the cylinder at your expense (unless a clause says otherwise). Keep the old cylinder to return it at the end of the lease if the landlord requires it.
• ✓Owner / building management: for a building door or a flat entrance door in a co-ownership, check the rules before changing the lock type.

Managing duplicates after replacement
