Key Spins Freely in the Lock: Causes and Solutions
Your key spins freely without opening or locking? Common causes, gestures to avoid and solutions from a Paris locksmith to resolve the situation.
You insert the key, it turns freely, but the door will not open — or no longer locks. This symptom is common in Paris, on worn cylinders and multipoint locks alike. Here are the main causes, gestures to avoid and lasting solutions.
The most common causes
1. Worn or damaged cylinder
Internal pins wear out, especially if you often force the key or use damaged keys. The cylinder “turns” without correctly driving the mechanism.
2. Bit / cam that no longer drives
On some cylinders, the part that operates the lock is worn or broken: the key feels free, nothing moves behind.
3. Disengaged multipoint lock
A point (top or bottom) may be jammed or a connecting rod broken. The key turns, but locking is no longer synchronised.
4. Misaligned door
Old building, humidity, tired hinges: the bolt no longer finds the strike. It feels like “it spins freely” when the problem is mechanical / alignment.
5. Break-in attempt or impact
Forcing may have sheared internal parts without it being visible from outside.
What not to do
- ✓Force by turning harder (guaranteed broken key)
- ✓Inject large amounts of WD-40 into the cylinder (attracts dust, can make things worse)
- ✓Dismantle the handle at random without landmarks
- ✓Call the first “€29” number without a quote (scam risk)
Better a clean diagnosis. If you are locked out, contact a serious locksmith repair service.
Solutions by diagnosis
| Diagnosis | Typical solution |
|---|---|
| Worn cylinder | Cylinder change from ~€220 incl. VAT (high security) |
| Damaged key | Recutting + test; sometimes a new cylinder if the pins are tired |
| Multipoint failed | Lock repair or replacement |
| Alignment | Hinge / strike adjustment, sometimes door repair |
| After break-in | Securing + door armouring quote |

Difference between “spins freely” and “stiff key”
Two similar symptoms, two diagnoses:
- ✓Stiff / forcing key: often alignment, strike, lack of suitable lubrication, or early wear — treat early
- ✓Key that turns freely with no effect: drive failure, cylinder or lock case — more structural intervention
In both cases, insist carefully. A key that breaks in the cylinder adds an extraction and lengthens the job.
Can the door still be secured the same evening?
Yes. After opening or diagnosis, we can often:
- Replace the cylinder immediately (vehicle stock for common models)
- Hand over new keys with, if needed, an ownership card
- Schedule within 24–48 h a multipoint repair or reinforcement (anti-pry strip, armouring) if the door has suffered
You do not stay with a door that “half closes” until the following weekend. If the door was forced, we document the damage on the invoice: useful for home insurance. Feel free to photograph the lock before we arrive if break-in marks are visible.
Prevention
- ✓Do not let the key force: have the door adjusted early
- ✓Replace a cylinder that has been “catching” for months
- ✓Limit the number of poor-quality duplicates
- ✓After moving in, start with a high-security cylinder
- ✓Listen for abnormal noises (clicking, a point that will not engage): these are warning signs
